October is National Physical Therapy Month

We wanted to share a little more about physical therapy and the role it plays in our clients lives during National Physical Therapy Month!

Our physical therapists are trained and licensed movement experts. Physical therapists work on strength and range of motion to improve our patients' functional mobility. We complete an initial evaluation and set functional goals tailored to the patient's needs.

The term hippotherapy refers to how occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech-language pathology (SLP) professionals use evidence-based practice and clinical reasoning in the purposeful manipulation of equine movement as a therapy tool to engage sensory, neuromotor and cognitive systems to promote functional outcomes. The direct and indirect benefits of equine movement, especially as a treatment tool for physical therapy, are endless.

The physical benefits include:

  • Improved fine and gross motor skills

  • Improved core strength

  • Reduced abnormal muscle tone

  • Improved attention

  • Reduced postural asymmetries

Some cognitive and social benefits include:

  • Improved enthusiasm for treatment

  • Improved attention to task

  • Improved confidence

  • Enjoyable human/animal interaction and bonds

The benefits of utilizing horses as a treatment tool is extensive! OT/SLP/PT + equine movement = maximizing therapy outcomes & reaching goals!
